Travel Essentials
The Golden Triangle tour is enjoyable year-round, but the ideal seasons are:
Best Time to Travel
- Summer (May to September): This is the primary tourist season. Weather is relatively stable, roads are generally open, and temperatures are comfortable during the day. However, nights can still be very cold.
- Shoulder Seasons (Late April & Early October): These periods can be beautiful, but the weather is more unpredictable. Some passes may still be closed in late April, and early October can see the first snowfalls.
How is the Weather?
- Daytime (Summer): 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). Sunny and pleasant, but the strong sun requires protection.
- Nighttime (Summer) 0°C to 10°C (32°F to 50°F): Temperatures drop drastically, requiring warm layers.
- Altitude: Leh and Ladakh are at high altitudes (over 3,500 meters/11,500 feet). This means:
- Lower oxygen levels, require time for acclimatization.
- Intense UV radiation, even on cloudy days.
- Dry air, leading to dehydration.

The Leh & Ladakh Essentials
Packing Essentials
- Clothing: Layering is key! Carry breathable cotton for the day and warm woolens for chilly nights. In winter, heavy jackets, thermals, gloves, and caps are a must.
- Footwear: Sturdy trekking shoes with good grip for uneven terrains and comfortable casual shoes for local sightseeing.
- Accessories: Sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, lip balm, and a hat to protect against harsh UV rays. A reusable water bottle and energy snacks are handy for long drives.
Cultural Tips
- Respect Local Customs: Ladakh’s Buddhist culture is deeply rooted in tradition. Dress modestly, remove footwear before entering monasteries, and avoid loud behavior in sacred spaces.
- Cuisine: Try local delights like Thukpa (noodle soup), Momos, Skyu (a traditional pasta dish), and the famous butter tea. Respect the local way of eating and avoid food wastage.
Travel Tips
- Acclimatization: Leh is at a high altitude, so take it slow on arrival. Rest, drink plenty of water, and avoid strenuous activities for the first 24 hours to prevent altitude sickness.
- Connectivity: Mobile networks are limited outside Leh. Postpaid SIM cards from BSNL, Airtel, or Jio work best in the region.
- Health & Safety: Carry essential medicines, a first-aid kit, and altitude sickness tablets if needed. Keep emergency contacts and local guides informed about your travel plans.
- Local Etiquette: Greet locals with “Julley” (hello/thank you), and always ask permission before photographing monks or villagers. Avoid touching religious artifacts or prayer wheels unnecessarily.
